The Green Technology Initiative (GTI) is a consortium of companies pioneering green computing with the aim of helping to educate and inspire British businesses to become more energy efficient and environmentally responsible with their IT infrastructure.
The role of IT in the fight against climate change is vital. Switching off a PC at night and weekends can save the same amount of energy as it takes to make 394,000 cups of coffee in a year. It also saves money, from about £37 per year in energy costs to around £10 per year. Office equipment accounts for about 20% of all energy use, plus the cost of heating/cooling, and lighting those offices.
Installing energy saving devices, energy saving computer settings, low-power servers, and virtual server software can all help reduce these environmental and monetary costs. Read more at the Green Technology Initiative.
