I am like a creature of the night in this regard. I move stealthily and easily in the dark and I use the minimum amount of light in my house. I've always been that way and people laugh at me but at least I'm already green like that.

Switching on and switching off can cause a large spike of voltage that will destroy electronic circuits.

Light bulbs tend to blow when hit with full ON voltage.
Switching OFF can also cause the same shock.

Standby mode is in a state of readiness when the equipment is switched on, less of a shock should be experienced.

It is therefore better to drop the equipment into standby mode first then switch it off

It all depends on manufacturers and even models of TVs, some modern ones are just as bad and use 'vampire' power like older TVs. But yes, generally newer TVs are better. I've never heard of standby buttons lengthening the life of a TV and like you can't find any information about it, I'll let you know if I do.

You should really check out your facts about standby and power consumption. It may be true that some TVs used to use almost as much power on standby as when on, but that is not true with modern TVs.

In fact its doubtful that any LCD or Plasma TV sold today uses anything more than a tiny amount of power when on standby.

What I want to know is the claim that using standby over the wall socket actually lengthens the life of the TV and therefore is more effencient over the life of the TV. Its something I have had no joy in finding any reliable information about.
