Method Tub Scrub Eco Product Review
January 15, 2009
At home we have a separate bathroom and toilet, which is a shame as method’s Bowl Patrol and its Tub Scrub match quite nicely but are kept in different rooms.

Still, it doesn’t detract from how cool this bottle looks. For what is essentially a cream cleaner, the bottle is almost too cool for it. The prongs at the top are there to hold the sponge or cloth you do the cleaning with, something which I now use regularly and wouldn’t do without, it’s great just to be able to put the sponge back there with the bottle rather that in a bag or just in the cupboard next to it.
The cleaner itself is great too. Just squirt it around the bathtub and clean away. I found the taps came up really well too without a lot of effort. And it’s not just the bath that can benefit from this cleaner, the sink cleaned up great too.
The secret in its cleaning power is the use of finely milled marble in its ingredients, a first. And it’s still non-toxic and biodegradable – the first cool looking and environmentally friendly cream cleaner!
Available from places like John Lewis, Waitrose and Big Green Smile, you can look at method’s website to find more stockists. It costs around £3.00.
Method Bowl Patrol Eco Product Review
November 27, 2008
Method continues its domination of our homes, bringing out a toilet cleaner to go along with its Bathroom Flushable Wipes that we loved at Life Goggles.

Called Bowl Patrol (love the name), method once again shows how different it is by using lactic acid (a mineral dissolver) as its cleaning power. And it works well. What also surprised us was that the cleaner was both coloured (blue) and had a strong smell. Most of its products only have a faint scent and even if are coloured in the bottle, don’t leave a coloured mark. The blue does help you to know where you’ve squirted it under the rim and the smell is okay, not as fresh as some artificial scents but pleasant enough.
As usual, the design of the bottle is first class. Simple, but effective, it’s easy to squeeze the cleaner under the rim and leave it for ten minutes before cleaning away. And the good thing is it won’t harm any fish or anything in the sea after you flush.
Available from places like John Lewis, Waitrose and Big Green Smile, you can look at method’s website to find more stockists. It costs around £3.00.
Bulldog Face Wash Sensitive Eco Product Review
November 3, 2008
I reviewed Bulldog’s original face scrub recently and liked it a lot. This face wash is the company’s sensitive version of its regular face wash which I haven’t tried before but I usually go for sensitive versions.

As with all Bulldog’s products, it’s free from parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, artificial colours and synthetic fragrances and to be honest it doesn’t smell of much at all which was a disappointment – I need something to wake me up in the morning.
Despite this it’s still a pretty good product, cleans well and I like its eco-credentials. If I was given a choice between this and the face scrub, I’d go for that but if you prefer a smoother face wash then this will be for you. I did feel it worked well and my face was left clean afterwards, I just wasn’t that excited by it. It’s the same price as the scrub, around £4.50 but you get a bit more – 175ml. Go to www.meetthebulldog.com to find stockists. There’s also an informative video on the website which I’ve posted below or go here.
Lavera Men SPA Cool Lemon/Lime Shampoo Eco Product Review
October 22, 2008
As I’ve been growing my hair, shampoo has become more and more important and as I’m spoilt with all this eco-friendly shampoo I have, I’ve been relishing washing my hair. Lavera Men SPA Cool Lemon/Lime shampoo was sent to me by the friendly folk at Male Organics and Joel briefly reviewed Lavera’s gift set here.
What I need to ask him though is whether it’s lemon or lime flavour. Made in Germany (it carries the country’s organic certification called BDIH) it has the ‘flavour’ in different languages and says: “Cool Limone”, “Cool Lemon” and then in the English section it says “Cool Lime”. So I’m not sure to be honest. It doesn’t smell much like lemons but not like limes either, although reading the instruction leaflet it does say limes again plus mint and green mandarins.

Despite this confusion, it doesn’t really matter as the shampoo is lovely. It is indeed quite refreshing and the build up of a lather compared to, say, People Tree’s shampoo is much more meaning you can cover your hair with less of it.
It contains aloe vera too, a popular ingredient at the moment, I’m worried they might run out actually, and the shampoo cleans very well and leaves hair smelling nice – you can’t ask for much more.
Available from Male Organics, Lavera Men SPA Cool Lime (let’s agree on that) shampoo costs £5.95 for 150ml.
Bulldog Face Scrub Original Eco Product Review
October 17, 2008
I like a good face scrub, I think it’s to do with having a beard/stubble which means I like to get in between all those tricky hairs and get the dirt out. Bulldog’s original face scrub is free from parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, artificial colours and synthetic fragrances. As I’ve mentioned in other Bulldog reviews (go to our reviews page to see the others) a good thing about Bulldog is that you can go on its website and download a pdf of all the ingredients.

The face scrub also contains shea butter and rosehip oil to moisturise and the smell is dominated by the shea butter, which isn’t a bad thing. It comes is a small 100ml tube but you only need a small amount to spread around your face. In fact if you use too much it does take a hell of a lot of washing to get it off, but that makes me think it’s doing its job so that’s okay.
It’s also quite thick compared to other face scrubs I’ve used, but then again I like that and it works very well. I’ve been using it for a few weeks and am enjoying it, there’s also quite a lot left too so it should last me a while.
Bulldog original face scrub costs around £4.50 for 100ml and is available in the UK from places like Waitrose, Superdrug, Sainsbury’s and Debenhams. Check our www.meetthebulldog.com for more details.
Bulldog Natural Grooming Shower Gel – Lemon and Bergamot – Eco Product Review
October 10, 2008
I last reviewed Bulldog’s shower gel more than a year ago here. I said I liked it but it didn’t really live up to its title of “Awaken”. This new lemon and bergamot version rectifies this and the smell alone will waken you even on the darkest morning.
Bulldog brand toiletries have the Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Company tag and the shower gel is free from parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, artificial colours and synthetic fragrances. There are however quite a lot of chemical-sounding ingredients but a good thing about Bulldog is that you can go on its website and download a pdf of the ingredients. So if there’s something you don’t like the sound of you don’t have to buy it. That sort of honesty is what I like about the company.

As a shower gel it works great, fresh and zesty I prefer it that the company’s other shower gel and enjoy smelling it, which is a weird thing to say but it’s true.
The shower gel costs £2.99 for 200ml and is available in the UK from places like Waitrose, Superdrug, Sainsbury’s and Debenhams.
Headonism Organic Haircare Conditioner Eco Product Review
September 12, 2008
I see myself as a simple soul when it comes to washing my hair – either just shampoo or if the shower gel is suitable for hair then I’ll use that. So when Male Organics gave me some Headonism Organic Haircare Conditioner (scent 2 – sensuality) to test, I was a bit wary.
So I did what goes against every fibre of my being. I read the instructions. It soon became clear that while conditioner seems to be a vital component of haircare I’ve missed for 30 years, it is more useful for people with longer hair than mine. A ‘number 2′ trim doesn’t give much hair to “moisturise, nourish, rebuild and protect”. But despite not having a large toothcomb (to be honest I may have one, I just have no idea what it is) I ploughed on and immersed myself in the world of hair conditioning.

Headonism Conditioner Scent 2 is a 100% organic conditioner (although not certified) that has a combination of herbs and oils including the amazingly-named Goldenseal, Jojoba and Safflower. It seems everyone but me knows how conditioner works, so after being instructed to leave it on for a while I set about it. First of all the bottle is amazing. As I pulled the wooden/cork stopper out of the glass bottle I thought a genie would pop out. Alas that wasn’t the case, but the conditioner is quite thick so I actually had a bit of trouble getting it out at first. I can now do it with a decent shake but portion control is a little haphazard, mainly I end up using far too much.
Anyway it works quite nicely, even on my short hair and it leaves it nice and soft. I’m not sure if it makes much difference on me but my girlfriend likes it and any man with a bit longer hair would benefit from it. It’s scented with organic plant oils to evoke desire, luxury, arousal, sensuality and euphoria but seemed a bit odd to me. Not off putting, just a bit weird.
There’s no mention of whether the wooden/cork stopper or glass bottle is made from sustainable or recycled materials, but it is an impressive bottle and at £14 (or £10.50 on sale) from Male Organics it’d make a good present or why not treat yourself?
