JASON Tea Tree Deodorant Eco Product Review

February 5, 2009

JASON Pure, Natural & Organic products are new to me, but I was given the Tea Tree deodorant stick to try. Being a natural athlete (ahem), sweating is something I do when the temperature reaches about ten degrees Celsius, so it was a perfect choice for me to test.

Jason Tea Tree Deodorant Stick

The large deodorant stick is 2.5oz / 75g and besides containing certified organic tea tree leaf oil and Bisabolol (derived from Chamomile), is also alcohol, aluminum chlorohydrate and paraben free, contains no animal by-products and is not tested on animals. Tea tree oil is known (apparently) for its antifungal properties and helps the body get rid of odor-producing bacteria caused by perspiration. It also contains Azulene, for its skin soothing properties and is enriched with certified organic corn starch.

It is not too hard to test a deodorant, follow the instructions and go about your normal day and see if it works. It is not an anti-perspirant so I still sweated as usual but it did prevent any odor appearing, otherwise my other half would have been the first one to mention it. In fact it smelt very nice indeed, not a chemically as others I have tried and I am happy with it.

Available from lots of pharmacies, drug stores and online for around $5-$6.

Weleda Deodorant Eco Product Review

January 5, 2009

Everyone wants to smell nice, but doing it in an environmentally friendly way isn’t easy. At Life Goggles we’ve reviewed a few different organic deodorants including Green People’s Organic Homme and my favourite, Bionsen. To try and change my favourite, Big Green Smile sent me a bottle of Weleda Deodorant.

Weleda deodorant

Available in citrus and sage flavours, I received the sage and was initially a little under whelmed. Used to the sweet smell of Bionsen, I thought the herbal flavour of this less impressive at first. It sprays on with a pump action and a couple of squirts is enough to cover your underarm. Like other organic deodorants, Weleda doesn’t stop you sweating, it lets the pores function properly but neutralises the bacteria which makes sweat smell bad.

Free from artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives and aluminium salts, the spray contains things like lemon juice and essential oils such as sage, pine, rosemary and lavender. It dries quickly when sprayed on and the slightly odd smell soon dissipates. As I said it doesn’t stop you sweating but it does work well and there was no noticeable smell and I’ve been really pleased with it over the last few weeks.

Weleda Deodorant in sage or citrus is available from Big Green Smile for £5.70. While not certified organic in the UK, it is in its home country of Germany where it is a BDIH Certified Natural Cosmetic.

Bionsen Deodorant Eco Product Review

Bionsen kindly sent me a bottle of its deodorant for me to test. Usually I’m a spray deodorant kind of guy but not being able to send aerosols through the post, I opted for the pump spray. At £2.49 it’s not unreasonable, although I tend to choose my spray by being on special offer so is probably a little more than I would pay normally.

I was also reticent about the pump spray and the fact it would be wetter on my underarms, but I’ll try anything so I ploughed on. Bionsen is a hypoallergenic range containing Japanese spa minerals (whatever they are) and is aluminium and paraben free. There’s some science behind the deodorant as instead of it blocking the sweat glands like anti-perspirants, Bionsen (and other deodorants) tackle the odour instead. The “antiseptic agents and germ-killing ingredients target and kill the bacteria that causes body odour on contact. Fragrances also work to combat body odour but the natural, finely-tuned balance of the body is not affected”.

So does it work? As I said before I was worried about the wetness of the spray but after a couple of times you work out the right amount so it doesn’t dribble down your side and then I left my shirt off for five minutes after that too to make sure. And it really seems to work. I actually chose the two hottest weeks of the year to start my testing (May is the new August it seems) and it performed admirably. In fact even when I was sweating a lot, I had to get the Tube one day, there was no bad smell whatsoever. I still sweated, but sweated in a sweet smelling way.

I’m not sure it’s better than other deodorants or anti-perspirants I use, but I know it’s better for me and it’s certainly not worse which I suspect some people would think it would be. I like the smell more than other products I’ve used and think I’ll use it from now on. I discovered the girlfriend uses the roll-on as well when she tried to steal this as she thought it was for her. The roll-on is a bit cheaper at £1.99 and there’s also an aerosol spray at £2.99, stick at £2.49 and this pump spray is also £2.49. It’s available at high street chemists, supermarkets and John Lewis.
