This is Part 1 in our new series “How To Make Money From Your Blog”.
So you have a blog, or a website and are thinking of starting a blog. You spend time and money on it, and wish to get a little in return. So how do you make money by blogging?
Write Good Content
It’s much easier to say than to do. However there is no substitute for good, unique content. This will help your search engine rankings, help repeat visitors to your site and attract new visitors.
This series isn’t about how to write good content, it’s how to make money from writing good content. Before plastering your blog with adverts and affliate links, content is the most important part of your blog. Whether it’s alongside an business website or a standalone personal website, what you write is the most important thing. A great resource is Copyblogger’s Copywriting series.
Choose Your Topic Well
Choose something that interests you, something that will keep you coming back again and again to write about. Choose something without a lot of competition – entering a saturated market probably isn’t the best idea unless you’re already an expert. For advice on researching your topic, watch Tubetorial’s “What is your information product about?”
Host Your Own Blog
Although hosted services such as Blogger and WordPress.com allow you to place several types of adverts, it is always better to use a web hosting company to use for your blog. Why? Because you can have your own domain name and more control over what you host, what layout to use and what other software to install. Self hosting is cheap and with great free blog software such as the non-hosted version of WordPress, there is very little reason not to if you’re serious about making money online.
Choosing a web hosting company can be slightly difficult – a couple of suggestions (for which I am not paid for recommending, a bad example of making money from your blog however I don’t want to lead you in a direction just because I’m paid for it – a topic we will cover later!) are Uplinkearth and MidPhase as both have a simple automated WordPress install.
Monetize Your Site
Obviously! This can be done in a variety of ways, and this blog will take you through those ways step by step in order that you can maimise your revenue from getting the previous steps right. Life Goggles will take you through:
- Contextual advertising
- Text Link adverts
- RSS feed adverts
- Affliate links
- Paid blogging
- And much more!
