The £5 Eco-bag

Currently selling on eBay for around £100, Sainsbury’s £5 “Eco-Bag” is designed to reduce the amount of plastic bags used at supermarkets.

Designed by Anya Hindmarch, the unbleached cotton bag shown below is currently limited to only 20,000 bags and has sold out, with each store only having 30 bags for sale.

According to We Are What We Do, we use on average 167 plastic bags a year, with only one in every 200 bags being recycled (Waitrose offers this service is anyone was wondering), and plastic can take up to 400 years to break down in a landfill.

A good idea, or not?

  1. I dont think the Anya Hindmarch bag is quite so Eco as it claims to be. It was made in China from cotton, absent of any organic or fair trade body approval.

A good idea but this is clearly an fashion product as opposed to an environmental concept

  2. Thanks James, good points. It seems like it’s done well to promote the problem of plastic bag usage, but has a lot to learn in terms of being an “eco-friendly” promotion.

  3. A great idea! Plastic bag is a serious environmental concern.Plastic bags are everywhere! Everyday, we are handed countless plastic bags: when we go to the grocery store, retail clothing store, book store, restaurants, etc. Most of the time, plastic bags are superfluous and avoidable.
