Re-Use Old Computers Rather Than Recycling Them

Computer Aid is the world’s largest non-profit supplier of computers to developing nations. Whilst they also recycle computers, re-using them is 20 times more effective at saving life-cycle energy.

The production of every desktop PC consumes 240kg of fossil fuels, 22kg of chemicals and 1.5 tonnes of water according to a recent study. A re-used PC can have a 3 or 4 year life-span at schools and universities in Africa.

Businesses and individuals alike can recycle, so if you have old computers why not re-use them with Computer Aid.

  1. Wow, I had no idea such a staggering amount of water went into making the average computer! It’s amazing when you think how quickly schools and places of businesses go through the things. The little country school down the road from me has a policy to sell off all the computers and replace them with new ones ever 3 years. It certainly makes me wonder about how often schools with greater funding and businesses that rely on cutting edge technology, update their systems. I also wonder about how necessary it is to do so. I seriously doubt one needs top of the range equipment to carry out basic tasks.


  2. Good point Kev, how much processing power does it take to run Word, IE and Excel? Probably more than it should, but a basic PC should last more than 3 years running those applications. I’m not sure how that calculated those figures, it must be pretty complex.
